QUEST students in 2nd - 5th grades are required to read 4 books this school year. The book lists and the due dates are listed in the tab titled "Book Lists" and "Reading Timeline" (See the above menu). The books will be read at home. The first three books will be assigned by the QUEST teacher, Mrs. Stark. It is optional for the first graders to read the selected novels. They may choose to read one, two or all four of the books from the second grader's reading list. Mrs. Stark needs to know in advance if your first grader will be participating in the home reading program. The last book will be chosen by the student. The students will select a nonfiction text to read. I will send home more information about the student choice book later in the year. That book is not due until April 16. The home reading is mandatory for students in grades 2-5.
It is each family's responsibility to acquire the books. You may check them out at the local or school library, buy them on-line, load them on an E-Reader, borrow them from a friend or family member, or purchase them at a book store. If you are purchasing the books, I highly recommend you acquire all three books right away. My hope is that students develop good time management. It is my expectation that the students read a little everyday. I will work in conjunction with the general education teachers with their home reading programs. The QUEST reading program will be a book club concept. Students will read books at home following a reading timeline. We will have an in-class book discussion as well as participate in creative challenges. The students will take a comprehension assessment half-way through reading the book and then a second assessment once the book is read in its entirety. Students' reading grades will be reflected on their report card based on their assessment scores. In the spirit of a book club we encourage parents and families to read the books together and have enthusiastic conversations about the stories. Please discuss the books with your child to confirm if he/she understands the book they are reading. It is perfectly acceptable to read some or the entire book to your child. For the fourth book, the students will read a book they choose. The book must be nonfiction. It must be at the child's reading level. Teacher approval will be required for this book. |
